Port Blair, March 5: The A&N Islands are covered with 81% of tropical rain forests of its total geographical area and it is rich heritage of Biodiversity having various eco-systems like marine, terrestrial, coastal, mangroves etc.

Extended summer season may cause forest fire as dry leafs are susceptible and works as good fuel. In past, few forest fires have caused damage to forest, wildlife and environment etc. In view of this, Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director (Disaster Management), A&N Administration has requested the residents of rural areas surrounding forest to follow the advisory on Do's and Don’ts of Forest Fire and to safeguard the eco-system of this Territory.

Port Blair, March 5: Under the National Solar Mission, the Government of India has set a target of installing of 40 GW Grid connected solar rooftop systems (GCRTS) in the country. MNRE, Government of India, in collaboration with the Electricity Department, A&N Administration has introduced 40% subsidy for the installation of grid connected rooftop solar power plants for residential consumers in the A&N Islands. The achievement till date in the A&N Islands is 4.15 MW in the government buildings, 30 KW in the residential buildings and 55 KW in the commercial buildings under South Andaman, which have already been installed and synchronized with the Electricity Department Grid.

Port Blair, March 5: The Jal Jeevan Mission is a Central Government initiative to ensure sustainable 100% Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to rural households in India. It is being implemented in A&N Islands by the Andaman Public Works Department. Andaman Nicobar State Water and Sanitation Mission (ANSWSM) is the Nodal Agency for implementation of this scheme in the UT.

Port Blair, March 5: The Govt. of India, Ministry of Science & Technology is implementing Young Scientist Fellowship scheme for Young Scientist & Technologist (SYST) engaging Young Researchers towards Socio-Economic Development and Sustainable Development Goals. The Young Scientist Fellowship scheme provides opportunities to young scientists for pursuing existing and innovative research. The scheme is focused on young scientist and technologists who have adequate background and training in the field of Science & Technology and encourage academic institutions, national labs and other S&T institutions to avail the benefit under this scheme.

Port Blair, March 5: To celebrate ‘POSHAN Pakhwada’ under ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ from March 1 to 16, 2023, a rally was conducted under ICDS (Urban Project), South Andaman on March 1, 2023. The rally was flagged off by the Child Development Project Officer, ICDS (Urban Project), Smti Zarina Bibi. The objective of the celebration of ‘POSHAN Pakhwada’ is to bring to focus on nutrition with the tagline ‘Har Ghar, Poshan Tyohar’. The initiative is about spreading behavioral change and communication (BCC) messages related to maternal, infant and young child care and feeding practices. It also includes other related interventions such as growth monitoring, anemia management, hygiene and sanitation, and so on.
